School of Linguistic Sciences and Arts (formerly the School of Linguistic Sciences)JSNU is a professional linguistic school with distinctive features and significant influence home and abroad. During the long-term constructing process, we have always adhered to an integrated and comprehensive research orientation, achieving fruitful results in the construction of frontier disciplines and inter-disciplinary studies such as neurolinguistics, engineering linguistics and theoretical linguistics, forming the characteristic research mode of basic-research-oriented language ontology study with an application and popularization of research results. The School has achieved quite a few “Firsts” or “the Only’s”throughout the country or in Jiangsu Province.

Our distinguished professor Yang Yiming is the first scholar in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics field that has been granted the “Yangtze River Scholar Award”. At the same time, we have chair professor Li Ping, another “Yangtze River Scholar Award”winner, and Professor Zhu Zude, a Jiangsu Provincial Distinguished Professor.

Based on the structure of the original Institute of Language Study and its academic and disciplinary forces, the School is established in 2008 as the only professional linguistics school in China mainland, with an independent institutional system. Hao Ping, the contemporaryVice Minister of Education Ministry and the Chairman of State Language Commission, when unveiling the nameplate for the School, pointed out that the establishment of the School was a milestone in China’s linguistics history.

China’s Neurolinguistics originated here. The linguistics research team of JSNU was the pioneer of China’s Neurolinguistics. Since the 1990s, we had begun to combine linguistic study with Neuroscience, established the research orientation of Neurolinguistics, enrolling and training China’s first Neurolinguistics Doctors and Masters. At present, our research covers dyslexia, neural lexicology, neural syntax, neural phonetics and the neural mechanism of language disorder like sign language, stutter and aphasia, achieving high-level results.

The School was granted a first batch ofKeyBasic Research Bid Project of the National Social Science Foundation, “theResearch of Neurolinguistics and Discipline Construction”, accompanied with 3 other National Social Science FundKey Projects, 2 National Natural Science Fund Projects and 1 “973”Project.

The School has China mainland’s first linguistics research paperpublished on Brain, the international top-level Brain Science journal, which was cited for over 40 times by SCI periodicals in the following 2 years.

One research wonthe highest award by the Government of our country in the field of Humanities and Social Sciences: China’sOutstanding Achievements in Humanities and Social Sciences College Award--- the First Prize of Humanities and Social Sciences Research of Ministry of Education, 2 Second Prizes in Higher Education Outstanding Research AchievementAward of the Ministry of Education, 4 First Prizes and several Second Prizes of Excellent Achievements in Philosophy and Social Science Research of Jiangsu Province .

The undergraduate teaching work was granted the First Prize of National Teaching Achievement Award (2014), and the postgraduate teaching was granted the first prize of Jiangsu Graduate Education Reform Achievement Award (2017), as well as the Second Prize of Graduate Education and Teaching Achievement Award by China Academic Degreeand Postgraduate Education Association(2014).

Ourjournal of Linguistic Sciences is selected in the first batch of funded journals by the National Social Sciences Foundation, and in a shortest period of time it is collected into the ESCI and CSSCI database, and into The Guide to the Core Chinese Journals. Among over 200 journals which had been funded by the NationalSocial Sciences Foundation, Linguistic Sciencesis the only linguistic journal that was awarded the Excellent Grade title (23 Excellent Grade winners all together).

We initiated the establishment of the Jiangsu Province Collaborative Innovation Center for Language Ability, which has a significant nation-wide influence. The Center’s Neurolinguistics research team undertook the major preparation and planning work for the first session of the International Conference on Languagesponsored by the Ministry of Education together with the People’s Government of Jiangsu Province and UNESCO, on the theme of “language ability andthe human civilization and social progress”in 2014. (For reference, see the web-page of the Collaborative Innovation Center for Language Ability.)

The School owns the first and the only key discipline in linguistics and applied linguistics of Jiangsu Province, a Jiangsu Provincial National Key Discipline Foster Point, and is among the first and second batch of Jiangsu Provincial University Predominant disciplines. There is the first key laboratory based on linguistics in Jiangsu Province, as well as the first batch of Jiangsu Provincial Philosophy Social Science Key Research Base, and the neurolinguistics team is among the first batch of “Qinglan”Innovation Projects of Jiangsu Province.

The School owns the most advanced platforms for the study of human brain function, equipped withNeuroscan 256 - on - brain electrical system ( ERPs ) and  GE 3.0 T magnetic resonance imaging system(fMRI).

The School has the largest space for linguistics study in China. In 2013, the Collaborative Innovation Center for Language Ability Building was completed, with about nearly 7,000 square meters. Together with the existing 3000square meters of independent school building, there are over 10,000 square meters in total area. It provides an excellent, comfortable, modern and international environment for students’ study and research here.
